Floating on the Shenandoah River

Lazy Hot Summer Afternoons

On hot days in Woodstock Virginia, we often take a "float" down the Shenandoah River which takes seven bends as it comes through town. It is the perfect way to cool off and relax after a busy week.

The Shenandoah is a lazy slow moving river in the summertime. It's shallow and sedate as it winds through the valley. We have some fancy inflatable tubes including a "bar" tube which is essentially a floating cooler. One needs to hydrate!

As we move slowly through the magnificent changing scenery, we see the mountains that frame the valley to the east and to the west. Waterfowl and fish are everywhere and we sometimes see eagles nesting.

This painting is a direct memory of these afternoons when it's super green and hot and we win this lazy procession of people enjoying the river.
